Located at the eastern edge of the Pennines on the banks of the River Calder, Wakefield is a cathedral city and former market town with a current population in excess of 100,000. Flint and stone tools, in addition to bronze and iron tools found in the area are evidence that there has been human habitation of the area since prehistoric times. Wakefield was a royalist stronghold during the English Civil War, and during the War of the Roses an influential battle was fought here during which Richard Plantagenet, Duke of York, was killed. At the start of the Industrial Revolution Wakefield was a prosperous market town and inland port with a successful trade in grain and wool. Historically the area was also known for its coal mining and at one stage the National Coal Board became the largest employer in Wakefield. Despite falling on hard times some collieries remained open until 1982. With the decline in industry many former sites have been designated as nature reserves and are now great examples of the resilience of nature. The diversity of flowers and wildlife at some of these sites is enough to inspire professional and amateur florists alike.
A short distance to the north of town lies Stanley Marsh, a local nature reserve with diverse habitats such as open water, woodland, grassland and marsh. The site was once part of a colliery and the pit was sunk in around 1835 and was known locally as Deep Drop Pit, and is now home to a vast array of diverse flowers and wildlife. Walton Colliery Nature Park is another local nature reserve created on a former coal mining site. Located 3 miles south of town this site contains various habitats home to flowers like Southern Marsh and Common Spotted Orchids.
Stoneycliffe Wood Nature Reserve was traditionally managed for timber production and is now being managed with the diversity of nature in mind. Now the older trees are protected and the canopy structure is being reinforced with new species. In spring and summer the entire reserve is awash with colour as flowers like wild garlic, yellow archangel and of course bluebells burst into life alongside the wood club-rush, Sprengel’s bramble and hemlock water dropwort that line the banks of the stream. The dead wood is home to an array of insects which attract all three species of wood pecker to the woodland.
Less than a mile from the city centre lies the Southern Washlands Nature Corridor which is a series of four distinct nature sites and together comprises a plethora of habitats. The site is a great place to see migratory birds in their preferred habitat and in the summer the flowers on display attract a variety of butterflies and insects.
The expert, artisanal florists at Bluebell designs are rightly proud of the history of the town they call home and the natural beauty of the surrounding area, and it is easy to see why after reading this brief history.
